To say nothing about Wright's comments about instruments lasting
only 10 years, and his playing being an amalgum of French and
German sound, etc. might give the impression that his arguments
are so strong that there is no need to contest them. And since I
have contested similar comments over the years, there is no need
to do so again here. But I do not withdraw from the field of
battle on this subject, only say nothing in light of the fact
that Wright is not here to defend himself, and that is a great
tragedy for clarinet players, even if I find his ideas about
mechanical issue very much disputable. He was, a great player
while we had the benefit of having him with us.

Subject: [kl] Harold Wright Radio Interview

Here is a very rare glimpse into what Harold Wright thought
about his
playing and the clarinet in general during a radio interview just
before
his death in 1993.

Some of his comments, like the one about a clarinet only lasting
about
10-12 years before it looses it sound, I found quite interesting.
He
claims that he changed clarinets every 10 years.

He also claims that his playing was an amalgam of German and
French
playing. He did say that he could not put his finger on what the
American school of playing is, but did acknowledge that there was
a
difference.

For those that have not heard Harold Wright play before, this is
a good
introduction. A very interesting interview and well worth a
listen to.
