I am getting close to finishing a new edition of The Clarinet Concerto
in Outline by Norman Heim.
While it has only been 10 years since it was originally published, I
have been able to add a considerable amount of additional information on
the composers listed. Extensive searches have been done on the internet
and we have also consulted standard references like Groves. I would
welcome help on a few of the composers where details are sparse.
The goal for the composer listings is to have their dates and the places
of birth and death and two or three sentences about their training and
work (as you can see below).
Here is Part 1 of our list.
1. Kalous, Jan (1754-1803), possibly a school master at Solnice near
Rychrov in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.
2. Tucek, Václav (late eighteenth century). According to the editor Jiri
Kratochvii, the composer belongs to the “village schoolmaster” branch of
Czech musical classicism. Tucek is also known to have written a concerto
for viola.
3. Purebl, Joseph, late eighteenth and early nineteenth century
composer. Information is sketchy, but the editor, William Martin,
suggests that Purebl was probably a monk at the monastery, Old Brno in
Czechoslovakia. This work was found in the monastery in a collection
dated 1750-1840. The only other known works are three Turkish marches.
4. Guilhaud, Georges (1851-19?), a French composer about whom little
information can be found. He wrote the following piece [a concerto,
originally for oboe] which has been arranged for many instruments and
co-wrote the music for a Grand Spectacle based on the play Michel
Strogoff by Jules Verne which opened in 1880 and enjoyed more than 2500
performances.
5. Beugniot, Jean-Pierre, born in France in 1935.

6. Constant, Franz (1910-1996). Born at Montignies-Ie-Tilleul, Belgium.
Early study with Moas, Jongen, Bourguignon and Absil at Brussels
Conservatory and then with Tomasi in Paris. He was a concert pianist and
performed with his wife, Jeanne Pellaerts. In 1941 he was appointed to
the staff of the Brussels Conservatory. A composer for orchestra,
concertos, chamber music, piano and songs. [Place of death]
7. Cruft, Adrian (1921-1987) Born in Mitcham, England. Educated at
Westminster Abbey Choir School, Westminster School and The Royal College
of Music. Studied composition with Gordon Jacob and Edmund Rubbra.
Played bass in London orchestras. Active in the Composer's Guild and the
British Music Information Centre. A composer for orchestra, choral music
and solo vocal music. [Place of death]
