While not an exact reply to Michael Bryant's question,
I was soloing in Russia and an older clarinetist came
up at intermission and wanted to show me something; a
matched set of pre-war Selmer Bb and A, *both* with
low Eb keys. Now an A with a low Eb, that was
unexpected!
