If you want to reduce the diameter of the C barrel you can paint a good
quick drying clear lacquer inside the female tenon. Clear nail varnish can
also be used (or black - or dos it matter?) You will probably need to
build up a couple of coats, but make sure you leave them to dry properly
before recoating or using. I can't guarantee the permanence of this fix,
but it does work.
