Dear Klarineters,

Just some personal reflections on the great ClarinetFest I just got home from.

It was wonderful to see so many old friends and acquaintances and to
renew them, as well as make new ones. That is always my favorite
part of these events. It was also nice to not have the pressure of
performance, so I could go to many events! (Though I would like to
play in KC next year).

I can't recall a festival that had so much interesting music, and
great performances both from expected and unexpected people.

Some of the highlight performances for me were:

The tribute concerts - what a great idea. William O. Smith, Keith
Wilson, and Elsa Ludewig -Verdehr were honered with performance by
their students, and WHAT performances they were!

Francois Houle on Wednesday's "Late Night" - fantastic ideas and
music, and a great duo to play the last set with. He's quite amazing
and I'd heard him before. If you're not familiar, please check out

Eric Mandat's new pieces Double Life and Moon In My Window - he's
done it again! (and Kelly's performance was great!)

Derek Bermel's performances and compositions - fantastic!

Michael Lowenstern - a genius as always, a wonderful man and dear friend.

The concerto concert with the Verdehrs, Mike Rusinek, David Shifrin,
Robert Spring, and Eddy Vanoosthuyse giving great performances of
standards (Copland, Finzi - WOW Michael!), and two wonderful new
pieces, the beautiful duo concerto by Stephen Chatman (who also has a
clarinet concerto I learned from him), and the interesting and
sometimes humerous duo concerto by Jan Van der Roost.

With many events scheduled simultaneously, and so many great vendors
there, I often wished I could be in two or three places at once. I'm
sure I missed some amazing performances or great equipment. I guess
I'll have to go again next year.

Cheers,

Sean Osborn
