Dame Thea was a wonderful lady and teacher. As a teenager I recall
hearing on our BBC Third Programme a recording of the Brahms Sonatas
in which Thea played both instruments - early days of BBC multi-track
technology in the 60's. And she was appointed as the clarinet adviser to
our students when I taught at Chetham's School of Music: once whilst
accompanying a student in the Nielsen Concerto, without missing a note on
the piano, she called out fingerings, dynamic instructions, phrasing hints -
her skills were phenomenal and her care and consideration for all her
students unbeatable. As soon as we heard she was due to visit we'd smile
and when she arrived the day would be full of fun and love for high-level
music-making. A great musician we'll all miss very much indeed. Colin.
