Dear List,

I stumbled across this while researching the Golden Crest -
Burke-Phillips All Star Recordings and have gotten permission for a
limited rights release on the Internet. Neither Jimmy Abato nor
Charlie Russo (who were both on the Burke-Phillips record date)
recall the date and it is not entirely clear, upon listening to the
recordings, if the players are top tier players or well rehearsed
college students. A mystery which may never be solved. I am fairly
confident in saying that this is the first commercially released
recording in the history of the Clarinet Choir, although I would be
more than interested if someone has information contradicting this assumption.

Sadly, the masters are lost, but I was able get these recordings from
an LP transfer. This LP appears to be extremely rare and,
interestingly enough, is not listed in the Golden Crest official
catalog I have (there is, however, a conspicuous missing entry in the
catalog right where this LP would fall) . It is entirely possible
that it was (or was meant to be) a promotional tool for Leblanc
which may have provided the larger harmony clarinets for the session.
I base this theory on the knowledge that the Golden Crest clarinet
choir + soloist recording session of Tchaikovsky Violin Concert Third
Movement (conducted by Cailliet) was sponsored by Leblanc and
released under the Burke-Phillips name. Leblanc also provided the
larger harmony clarinets for Tchaikovsky session . Additionally,
Leblanc is credited with the cover art to this release (a picture of
a complete family of clarinets which I hope scan in, edit, and post
soon). Finally, from the liner notes:

He [Cailliet] serves at present as Musical Director, Director of
Music Publications of the G. Leblanc Corporation, Kenosha, Wisconsin.
