A number of people have talked around the point of insurance
requirements for U.S. cars taken into Canada.

>>>I just called Avis rent a car here in Vancouver to check on this. One
>>> needs a drivers license and a credit car. For insurance, one can buy
>>> Avis' insurance or, at home in the States, you can call AAA and ask to
>>> buy some international car insurance. No special Canadian Insurance
>>> card is necessary.

>This only applies to rental cars, right? What about those of us who >will
>be driving our own vehicles??? I haven't been to Canada since 1991
>when we went over to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls for the day. I
>don't remember any special requirements then.
>~Sue

I don't believe that Canada requires proof of insurance to bring your
car into Canada, but if you have an accident it would be highly
desirable to be able to show proof of insurance.

We get into Canada a couple of times a year and my insurance company
will provide, free of charge, a card showing that my insurance is valid
in Canada. They will issue it for specific periods of time, but are now
simply sending me a permanent card every year with my renewal.

With no cost, it's probably a good idea to request this.
