It could work anyway- they can't copyright what
isn't theirs..... They can copyright the
formatting, editorial changes, comments etc... If
you can determine what they changed (or didn't
change) you may be OK anyway. If someone has
access to an early score of the work (and you have
time!) you may find you're fine or that there is
just a change or two to be made to take it back to
the original rather than starting from scratch.
