Quintet of the Americas in Concert at New York University on June 22 and
on June 24 at The Jewish Center of Jackson Heights, Queens

New York, NY – The Quintet of the Americas will present two very special
concerts on Friday, June 22 – 7:30 PM at New York University’s Loewe
Auditorium, 35 West 4th Street in Manhattan and on Sunday, June 24 – 4
PM at the Jewish Center, 37-06 77th Street in Jackson Heights, Queens.

The June 22 concert, presented as part of the NYU Summer Institute for
Woodwind Quintets, will feature the Quintet of the Americas performing
the premiere of Marc-Antonio Consoli's Varie Azioni V (commissioned by
the Quintet of the Americas with funding from the New York State Council
on the Arts), Steven Stucky's Serenade, Neil Rolnick's Ambos mundos
(commissioned by the Quintet of the Americas) and other quintet masterworks.

This concert is free and open to the public and is sponsored by The
Steinhardt School of Education, Department of Music and Performing Arts

The June 24 concert, presented by the Latin American Cultural Center of
Queens in partnership with the Quintet Of The Americas and composers
Neil Rolnick and James Cohn, will feature Mr. Rolnick’s Ambos Mundos and
Mr. Cohn’s Fiesta Latina along with Villa-Lobos’ Choros 2, Steven
Stucky's Serenade, Paquito D’Rivera’s Aires tropicales, Jorge Olaya
Muñoz’ Colombian Dances and Ernesto Lecuona’s La comparsa.

The NYU Summer Institute has 25 high school and college students at the
school to study with the Quintet of the Americas from June 17 through
24. Every day the students rehearse in the quintets formed by the
institute and receive coaching sessions to prepare for their student
concert on Saturday evening June 23 at 7:30PM in Loewe Auditorium. Some
other highlights of the week will be a master class on breathing by the
eminent teacher and flutist Keith Underwood, and a chance to meet the
Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky, both on June 19.

On Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24, the Quintet will be doing
demonstration concerts at the NY Hall of Science in Flushing Meadow Park
(http://www.nyhallsci.org/) with their Brazilian colleague, organic
percussionist Thiago de Mello. These will take place at 10:30 and 11:30

The Quintet of the Americas, consisting of flutist Sato Moughalian,
oboist Matt Sullivan, clarinetist Edward Gilmore, hornist Barbara Oldham
and bassoonist Laura Koepke, was formed in Bogota, Colombia in 1976 by
U.S. citizens who were principal wind players in the Colombian National
Orchestra. The group relocated to New York City in 1979 and has since
enjoyed an international career that has taken them to concert halls
throughout the Americas, the Caribbean Asia, including annual
performances at Manhattan's Americas Society since 1982. Two time
recipients of ASCAP-Chamber Music America Awards for Adventuresome
Programming, the Quintet's repertoire represents works from composers
with a wide-range of aesthetic viewpoints. They have recorded for CRI,
Newport Classics, MMC and XLNT. Their latest CDs are Karel Husa:
Recollections on New World and Dancing in Colombia on the MSR label. The
Quintet has been a past recipient of the CMA Commissioning Award in for
a commission by David Chaitkin and a three-year Residency Award for work
in Chicago. They are in residence in The Department of Music and
Performing Arts in The Steinhardt School at New York University. Visit
