I play in several community bands, and neither have a fee to play.

The first is sponsored by a local private college, who furnish the rehearsal
space, pay the director, and give us use of the auditorium for the 3 or 4
concerts we play per year. College students can take the class for credit,
but the rest of us just play. While the college used to have a music
collection (I catalogued it at one time), it has since disappeared and we
play music borrowed from all the schools in our district, plus some from
outlying districts -- especially if their band directors play with our
group.

The second group is a municipal band, tonight starting its 113th consecutive
year. We get a annual grant from the city (hoping to raise it this year) and
take collections from the audience. We play every week at a bandshell in the
park (use and chairs also provided by the city), with rehearsal the evening
before in a space donated by one of the small local malls. Shirts are owned
by the group and lent out to the musucians for the summer. Music comes from
the band's library (much of it unsuitable for this particular venue,
unfortunately), from the director's personal library, or from the school
system. (Can you tell we have a GREAT music program in this district?!)
