Funny story along those lines. When The Godfather was dubbed into
Italian... Well, Brando _looks_ very macho and imposing so (according
to Italian friends of mine) he was given a very macho voice, very deep
and rich. So later, when my friends saw it in the original English,
they couldn't believe what they were hearing---"Why is he speaking like
this, what is this crazy sound he is making?"

Even in a situation where the dubbing is done in a very sympathetic and
careful manner the need to fit within a given space and time usually
forces imperfect solutions on the words chosen. The same is true of
subtitles but at least you have the _chance_ to appreciate the
difference between what's written and what's actually said.
