Leila, Kevin, Michael & Tony----

After hearing all the comments, I am making it my project to listen to the
whole Kell boxed-set through the ears of a 69-year-old experienced musician,
who has lived this paraphrased verse from "A Chorus Line".

I went to band and had it made,
And so I stayed,
The rest of my life.
All thru the years,
Both lean and fat....
I can do that!
I can do that!

But I digress. In the years 1952-54, I first heard the records with an
attitude of hero worship. During my study with him, Reginald Kell was
always encouraging, always helpful. I wanted to get onto the symphonic
track, but jazz always had a stronger pull. Kell knew that.

And when I heard various musicologists argue about the whichness of what,
in regard to the intentions of the composer v.s. "ego insertion," I came
down fully on the side of ego insertion.

My viewpoint was, and is, each composer gave unto me a cantus firmus, upon
which to impose my own angst or joy, depending on how I felt at the time I
put my clarinet in my face.

That's why I play jazz. My last symphonic clarinet performance was under
the baton of Paul Hindemith. After that, I hung up my cleats, so to speak.

To quote Omar Khayyam:

Myself when young, did eagerly frequent
Doctor and saint, and heard great argument,
About and about it, but evermore,
Came out by the same door as in I went.

If you want to hear me as I am now, access Eli Newberger's website, access
the music, put the speakers on and play "Bei Mir Bist Du Shain!" as played
on TV.

Or access the website "Dr. Fidgety," and hear the sound samples. My own CD
is in process, as soon as I can get Bob Winter away from Keith Lockhart long
enough to go into a studio.

But I digress. More later----my diatribe against musicologists is coming!
Good luck to all with your never-ending quest for reeds! TC
