Deborah asked:

<<<How do I get a clarinet part for Carmina Burana to study? Luck's said
that it is rental only. Is there no other way to get just a clarinet part?
I am playing it in Amman in June and would like to look at it before I get
>there.>>>

Dan replied:

<<<You are, of course, doing the right thing by wanting to see the music
before hand. But the work is exceptionally simply, and can be done almost
at sight.>>>

It is also, IMHO, simply dreadful. You play *everything* three times, and
there are licks that you have to play again and again over and over. Real
Department of Redundancy Department stuff.

The 1st bassoon has some very uncomfortable high-register stuff (supposed to
be a goose being cooked or something like that), but as I recall the
clarinet part is a real yawner.

Have you ever heard that thing? It was premiered at a Nazi festival in 1938
and I think it is probably the best example ever of a thoroughly fascist
music.>>>

He was given awards by the government in Germany, sure. He lived there and
was a prominent musical citizen. I'm not sure that this equates with being
a member of the Nazi party (which may also have been a necessity to make a
living) or a believer of its vile philosophy.

. . . a current example. George Bush has awarded the Presidential Medal of
Freedom to Doris Day, Julia Child, Bill Cosby, Nelson Mandela, Fred Rogers
and Pope John Paul II. I don't think this makes any of them "Republicans,"
does it?

As far as the music being "fascist," I don't think so. Distasteful, yes. A
translation of the lyrics is most interesting - a mix of binge drinking and
kiddie porn, amongst other fun stuff.
