This is definitely possible. When I was a just a
little kid, sometimes after local professional
repairers "repaired" my clarinets I ended up repairing
them myself and eventually became a repairer.

It is important to know your limits. I know many
clarinetists who do very minor repairs themselves, but
know exactly when to live it to a pro.
