I've killed many a pair of glasses (and learned that my keys don't work
when I tighten the screws) by "exploring." Now I know one good way to
fix a pair of glasses and a million ways not to!

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Back on the subject. I too would take it to a shop. While exploring is
great, it is easy to go past the point of no return.
