Subj: [kl] Altissimo Break
Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 19:38:14 -0400

Hi everyone!

Can anyone recommend some exercises or etudes for crossing the break into
the altissimo range? I do OK as long as I go b-c-c#-d (and vice-versa), but
if I have to skip a note, I get a noticeable delay before the note sounds.
B to D is especially bad. Also, one of the pieces I'm working on now has
several jumps from the altissimo down to the lower clarion register (e and
d, mostly), and I have a lot of trouble with that, too, although the other
way usually speaks very well. As well as I remember, I had the same problem
with my old clarinet, so I don't think it's an equipment problem. Any
ideas?

Thanks,

Angelia

P.S. For those who were curious about my name: My first name is pronounced
Angela. My mom was in college when I was born, and for some reason known
only to English majors, the -a sound at the end of a word is supposed to be
spelled -ia. She thought it was cute, but my sister (Lauria) and I have
been stuck explaining it for 30-some years! My last name is pronounced
exactly the way you think it is! We think it's German, although most of the
ancestors we know about actually came from Britain (mostly as transported
criminals, but that's another story!). Occasionally someone still makes a
stupid joke about it, but I survived grade school and Jr. High, so it
doesn't bother me anymore!!!!!
