As a yearly visitor to Canada by auto, I can add that you certainly need
some serious form of ID to re-enter the USA by car from Canada, something
more than a drivers license. So it's either a passport or a birth
certificate.

Once I came in without either and was treated to a provocative dressing
down, and finally allowed to enter.
