Gary,
It's supposed to be a small line under the o. Just like the line under
the 'th' when you write 4th or 1st and put the letters smaller and in
superscript. It s a very common copyist's abbreviation. We also
abbreviate tempo as t'o (with the o in superscript and underlined).
I've even seen allto for allegretto with the 'to' in superscript and
underlined.
