For those at Northern Illinois University, University of Illinois, Southern
Illinois University, and Indiana University. Say hello!

Clarinet Trio Heads to Midwest
A clarinet trio from "The President's Own" is preparing for its first
educational outreach to the Midwest as part of the Marine Band's commitment
to professional musical development. Master Sergeants Jihoon Chang, Jay
Niepoetter, and Randall Riffle will travel to four universities in five days
to perform for and coach clarinet students and music majors. The three
clarinet players have played together as a trio for nearly 13 years, and
have known each other since high school. The trip will include a visit to
the University of Illinois in Urbana, Master Sgt. Chang's alma mater, and
Northern Illinois University (NIU) in DeKalb, Master Sgt. Niepoetter's alma
mater. Master Sgt. Niepoetter is thrilled to return to the DeKalb area.
"This is a wonderful chance to play in front of our former teachers and
their students. We can let the students know we were once in their shoes."
The group's first stop, Monday, April 2, will be at NIU, where they will
perform a recital at 6:30 p.m., and spend time coaching clarinet ensembles.
On Tuesday, April 3, they will offer a master class at the University of
Illinois. The three will travel to Carbondale, Ill., where at 4 p.m.,
Wednesday, April 4, they will perform at Southern Illinois University (SIU)
then speak with SIU's Wind Ensemble students. At 10 a.m., Thursday, April 5,
the trio will offer a master class at SIU. That evening at 8:30 p.m., they
will perform for Indiana University's clarinet studio in Bloomington. On
Friday morning, the three Marine Band members will return to Indiana
University where they will conduct mock auditions for the students. All
appearances are free of charge and open to the public.
Program highlights for the trio's performances and master classes include
Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio in C, Paquito D'Rivera's Habanera from Aires
Tropicales for Clarinet Trio, John Harbison's Trio Sonata, and Marcel
Mihalovici's Sonata, Opus 35. The program also will feature One Liners,
composed by SIU Professor, Dr. Eric Mandat, Niepoetter's former clarinet
teacher.
The clarinet trio has performed as part of the Marine Chamber Ensembles
program and the Marine Band's educational initiative Music in the Schools.
"We've played together for a long time, and I think it's great that Jay and
Jihoon are going back to their roots," said Master Sgt. Riffle. Master Sgt.
Chang is looking forward to playing great music and sharing what he has
learned as a member of "The President's Own." "Part of the reason this is so
exciting," he said, "is that we're taking the music we love so much and
bringing it to the students, hoping to have an impact on them."
