I actually think the Mendelssohn, though not deep, has considerable
charm, especially the slow movement. It works well on historical
clarinet with fortepiano and I've played it several times in concert (I
think I programmed it with the Danzi bassethorn sonata and the
Concertpieces.) I rather think that anyone who enjoys playing other
salon-style works, -- Boildieu, Burgmuller--will appreciate the
Mendelssohn.

Certainly, it's not on a par with Midsummer Night's Dream or the
remarkable Octet for strings, which dates from the following year. My
guess is that the composer realized this, possibly using the sonata as
an hone his skills in writing for clarinet orchestrally, -- and if this
was the reason it was not published.
