Regarding this work, which it seems a lot of us have actually played for
Berio (wonderful I think!!), there are also two different editions of the
work in print (or at least there were, since I have both). There's the
older, which lists the multiphonic fingerings with the low Eb key, and the
newer edition which lists alternates. Both editions have the same edition
number UE15993 so it would be interesting to see if Universal is still
printing the older edition for the full-boehm instrument.

I was given another solution by another player before I played the piece for
him which produced the pitches B-G for the first one and B-F# for the
second. We discussed the issue and he seemed mildly annoyed with the fact
that every clarinet player brings up the same issue. So, perhaps there were
multiple solutions as suggested by Tony and Jonathan and in the end he just
wanted the effect and wasn't so concerned about the pitch material. That
would be hard for me to believe, but, maybe he just got tired of dealing
with the situation. This is supposition of course and I don't presume to
offer a definitive opinion, just an observation that I made. Other than
that, he was a barrel of fun to work with!

Happy Berio-ing!!
