Subj: [kl] A new Golijov??

The Brooklyn Philharmonic gave a concert reviewed in today's NY
Times (2/13) and the program included David Krakauer playing
Golijov's "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind." It's a
terrific piece but what's new about it is that instead of a
string quartet accompanying the solo clarinet, Golijov has now
relase a version for string orchestra. It's a real klezmer piece
and Krakauer rides it hard, like a wedding in Romania.

You might think that playing a work originally for string quartet
would be easily arranged for a string orhcestra, but I think the
issues are more complex than that. For one thing, the resources
that support the clarinet are much stronger, and the double bass,
if it doubles the cello, add the dimension of an entire octave.
So it is an entirely new sonic experience.

The arrangement is by Golijov himself, and I presume that it,
like the original, is or will be available in an edition. For
those who have not heard the work, it has been recorded with
Krakauer and the Kronos Quartet. (That's practically an
alliteration of "K's." Krakauer and the Kronos Kwartet!!)

Interestingly, Golijov was recently named the composer in
residence for the Mostly Mozart Orchestra of New York.
