I did not know this, but now I am even happier about my recent Forte C
clarinet purchase! I have transposed one of the exposed runs in the 1st
act from Bb to A (around rehearsal # 130), I hope Strauss won't mind too
much.
Anyway, come and see us. As I said the orchestra is only made of
volunteers so you will not be hearing the Met, but the singers are very
good (many of them students at the BU opera institute) and the overall
performance should be quite good.

And to be perfectly clear, here is what my score (furstner) says about the
clarinet section:
main orchestra:
-D clarinet, alternating on Eb clarinet and Bb clarinet
-2 Bb clarinets, alternating on A and C (where C clarinet is specified, it
is absolutely forbidden to perform the part on A or Bb clarinet.)
-Basset Horn, alternating on Bass clarinet.

Stage Band, Act III:
-C clarinet
-2 Bb Clarinets

In any case, all parts have a lot of great stuff to play and the basset
hornist is definitely having fun.
