While it is a very minor point, the 4th part is not for bass
clarinet doubling on basset horn. It is the other way round.
The part is for basset horn doubling on a bass clarinet. The
basset horn plays a great deal more music than the bass clarinet.

The instrumentation is what I think I said in an earlier note,
but since two people have come on to restate the instrumentation,
it is possible that I incorrectly gave the number of players
needed. If so, I apologize.

And Strauss himself insisted that the soprano clarinet players
executed on C where the part called for it. There is a letter
that he wrote to someone indicating that at no time should the
players transpose the C clarinet part.

The instrumentation for "Der Rosenkavalier" includes 2 clarinets
(Both
playing Bb, A and C clarinets), Eb clarinet and bass
clarinet/basset horn.

The San Francisco Opera will be playing "Der Rosenkavalier" this
summer. I
have played it several times with the SF Opera and I always play
2nd
clarinet, which is a lovely part. It is one of the great scores
of the 2oth
Century and in my humble opinion among the very best music
composed by R.
Strauss. If you have not played a Strauss opera you are indeed
missing one
of the most satisfying musical experiences possible. Of course,
that
assumes, a good orchestra, great singers, a superb conductor and
several
good reeds!
