I did not find Frau Ohne Schatten terrifying, but exhausting. The
opera goes on forever. With intermissions you are tied up from 8
until around midnight.

And it demonstrates that Strauss, in his later music, was not a
good judge of what he wrote. It's not only long, but I found it
boring and wandering, thought the instrumental writing is very
good.
