Definitely one of the most pleasant and exciting experiences is
playing Rosenkavalier. Besides the brilliance of the music, the
orchestral parts are a constant delight and challenge. What you
described is, of course, quite correct, but the way you arranged
it makes it look like 6 players instead of 5.

The fifth part is a magnificent double: mostly it is basset horn,
but the double is bass clarinet.

And the final scene contains a trio of three women (one a trouser
role) including Sophie, Octavian, and the Marshallin that is so
stupendously melodic and harmonic that I could almost never play
it because my attention was constantly drawn away from the
business of playing to the supreme joy of listening.

And if that were not enough, after the trio concludes and the
Marshallin leaves the scene with her final words in response to
someone saying, "That the way it is with the young people" being
"Ja, ja" and sung in an interval that explodes with sadness.
Here she is, just 35, and is considered, "Die alte Marshallin,"
with the word "old" meaning the wife, not the field Marshall.

It is an opera that I could study and listen to for years in
remembrance of the many times I played it. I was always amazed
that anyone would pay me to play that work. I felt that if they
asked me for money for the privilege of playing it, I would have
said, "Absolutely."

For its 69th annual production, the LOWELL HOUSE OPERA presents
"DER
ROSENKAVALIER" ("The Knight of the Rose"), a comic opera in three
acts,
with music composed by Richard Strauss and libretto written by
Hugo von
Hofmannsthal. Set in 18th century Vienna during the reign of the
Empress
Maria Theresa, the opera features a fearless baron who seeks to
marry a
young woman to share in her newly ennobled father's riches.
Meanwhile, his
cousin, a princess, discovers with great poignancy that love may
not
survive the relentless passage of time. Probably the most popular
opera of
the 20th century, it combines great sentiment with colorful
comedy,
featuring some of the most exquisite writing for voices and
orchestra and
some of the most memorable waltz melodies. The opera will be sung
in
German with English surtitles; it will be fully staged and
costumed, with
orchestra.
Music directed by Channing Yu, stage directed by Edward Eaton,
produced by
Sarah Eggleston. There will be eight performances with
alternating casts.
