It seems to me that if the 1st movement (which I believe
explicitly calls for B-flat clarinet) was transposed a half step
higher than the original, but played on an A clarinet, it would
sound a half step lower. This would, therefore, produce the
piece with the correct pitches called for, even though it is an
strange and arduous journey that appears to get one no where.

As I remember the 2nd movement is the one written for A clarinet.
So all of this strangeness is not so strange at all. It allows
one to play the first two works on an A clarinet but have the
pitches come out as requested by Stravinsky. And it appears to
have been done to eliminate the necessity for a change from
B-flat to A clarinet between the first and second movements. (I
don't know what happened in the 3rd movement.)

Of course with this kind of transposing, it can get so confusing
that I may have it all backwards.

After reading Tony's post about the Stravinsky transposition, I
went
through some of the materials I had accumulated during the
research on
Kell. I came across a manuscript in Kell's script of the the 1st
movement of the Three Pieces that was one semitone higher than
the
original. It does not say, however, which clarinet it is to be
played
on.
