Dan,
Glad to get your perspective on this. When I talked with Kell's wife,
she was under the impression that folks were equally turned off by his
use of rubato. In either case, many people simply didn't give the guy a
chance. I spoke briefly by phone with Stanley Drucker during the writing
process and he said Kell's debut recital included the Brahms quintet; SD
thought it one of the greatest performances of any chamber work he had
ever heard.
