One of my first LPs (remember those?) I ever bought was the old London FFRR
recording of Kell playing the Mozart Concerto with the LSO (the bassoon
concerto is on the other side). I thought that's the was the way the
concerto should be played, and performed it like that as a kid. One of my
teachers heard me do it and really reamed me out for the slight vibrato and
"being overly Romantic" with the piece. I thus was promptly loaned a copy of
the Marcellus recording and told to "play it like that!" Today I listened
to both recordings, and enjoy them both. Marcellus is pure Mozart.... too
pure, IMHO. Yes, I'm putting on the Nomex flight suit....

Kell's recording is still a joy to listen to, for the very vocal treatment
he gives it. I often perform his bon-bon pieces on recitals, such as the
Ravel
"Piece en forme de Habanera", the Godard Berceuse from "Jocelyn", and the
Benjamin "Jamaican Rumba", because they're good ear candy. One of my
favorite LPs of his is an American Decca of these pieces, plus other of that
kind. I don't remember the title of the album, but it's the one with a
German system clarinet on the cover (I find that amusing....).

By all means order that CD set of Kell's playing. It's a tremendous
collection of a great, and often criticized, artist.
