Balancing a reed is not difficult. Rotate the clarinet to one side in
your mouth and then the other. If they don't match (and they seldom
do out of the box), use sandpaper, rush, the Vandoren wand or a knife
to scrape the hard side down to match the soft one. You'll probably
have to clip the tip slightly to bring the strength back to a
comfortable level.

Bonade said to leave the left side a little harder than the right, to
counteract the clarinet's tendency to roll off your thumb to the left,
but I've always found that an even balance works best.

This will at least double the number of useful reeds you get out of a
box and make almost all of them at least playable.
