Hi Gary,

First verify if the edition your customer wants is for B-flat or
A clarinet, and then confirm that the edition you intend to buy
is for the same clarinet pitch.

You know what the piece is for, of course, but your customer may
not realize that distinction.

Just because the B&H edition is published by a respectable
company does not mean that they will supply you with the edition
for A clarinet. It could be for B-flat clarinet, and that means
a significant change in the piano part. B&H prints editions
influenced by the number they expect to sell, and there could be
a lot of players who want to play the work but don't own A
clarinets, such as high school students.

If the piano part is in A major, then the solo part will be for
an A clarinet.

If the piano part is in B-flat major (such as the old Carl
Fischer edition edited by Simeon Bellison), then the solo part
will be for a B-flat clarinet.

This does not affect the fingerings that the clarinet uses, but
it certainly affects the key in which the piano must play. There
is nothing so distressing as getting ready to play on an A (or
B-flat) clarinet and then finding out that the piano part is in
the wrong key for that clarinet pitch.

Subject: [kl] Piano Reduction: Mozart Clarinet Quintet?

I customer asked about a piano reduction of the Mozart Clarinet
Quintet
K581 (we carry the Baerenreiter and Henle editions of the full
quintet).

The easiest piano reduction for me to get would be the B&H
edition
edited by Derik Hyde. Is this one ok? Is there something better
we
should get instead?

Thanks,

Gary
