I'm very sorry to hear of Menotti's death, even though I didn't realize he
was still alive! I saw one performance of "The Telephone" several years
ago, and still remember how delighted I was. The West Virginia Symphony
used to come through on educational tours every two or three years (until
the local arts council decided world music and pop were more lucrative.
Sigh!). My mother and I went to hear a Beethoven symphony (I think--it was
a long time ago!), and "The Telephone" made up the other half of the
concert. Real, live orchestra is very rare around here, and I was so
excited I had butterflies in my stomach. I remember sitting in the
auditorium reading the program and seeing "The Telephone", a one act opera,
and wondering how in the world they were going to do that on our tiny stage.
They had the orchestra all squashed into the back, and the action took
place out on the edge. It was hilarious, and the music was fantastic. I
hope that Menotti's music does become more popular. What I've heard
certainly deserves to be played more frequently!!!!!
