Thank you for your reply. Your explanation of the specialty horns provides
a good explanation to the odd four-digit serial number. I had thought the
horn was made sometime in the 50s. I'll wait for more after you've spoken with
your drummer friend. Glenna, the owner, will be thrilled to hear the
information. The problem when I opened the case was the cellulose-eating vermin of
some sort had done-in the majority of the pads and, of course, it needed
oiling -- both keys and wood -- really bad. The horn came from New Mexico with
its owner, some years ago. It had dried out, but since moving to Minnesota,
the horn's rings have all tightened onto the horn again. I can't go fast
enough to get the keys and pads back on and see how it plays. I suspect it's a
really nice-sounding piece of equipment.
