Concerning the Mendelssohn Octet arrangement - it seems we now have 2
arrangements. This work really deserves it so why not

Well - as I promised, I contacted the Emerson editions which have an
arrangement by Bowman and here is their full answer and deal which seems
fair enough :

Unfortunately, we don't have this music in stock so I can't give you any
answers at the moment! I can, though, order one for you and send it out to
you 'on approval' - this means you can look through it and send it back if
it's unsuitable. I think Hugh Bowman is a decent arranger (we publish one of
his ourselves), but I don't know about the movements till we get it.

If you want to go ahead with the on appro arrangement, you will need to
pre-pay with a credit/debit card and ensure the music arrives back in
pristine condition for your refund. We usually allow 21 days from the
invoice date, but if you need longer than that please specify.

With best wishes

I just returned from the concert at the Juilliard school. The
Mendelssohn was arranged by Samuel Baron. The performers were
faculty from the school, supplemented by some truly wonderful
students for the octet (arranged for double woodwind quintet with
piccolos when needed). The tempos were the same as any string
ensemble of the first rank would take. Needless to say the tonguing
in the last movement was unbelievable. More than that the lightness,
phrasing and musicality of the ensemble was a delight to listen to.
The arrangement is not yet commercially available. Interested
parties might contact Charles Neidich at the Juilliard School.
