I just returned from the concert at the Juilliard school. The
Mendelssohn was arranged by Samuel Baron. The performers were
faculty from the school, supplemented by some truly wonderful
students for the octet (arranged for double woodwind quintet with
piccolos when needed). The tempos were the same as any string
ensemble of the first rank would take. Needless to say the tonguing
in the last movement was unbelievable. More than that the lightness,
phrasing and musicality of the ensemble was a delight to listen to.
The arrangement is not yet commercially available. Interested
parties might contact Charles Neidich at the Juilliard School.
