In that case, it will have to be something special that causes
the work to be an unsatiscactory arrangement. The composition of
the Mendelssohn octet is so remarkable all by itself (to say
nothing of the fact that the composer was 16 at the time he wrote
it) that it would be hard for me to dismiss the effort on the
basis of someone else's opinion.

Incidentally, the manuscript of the work is in the Library of
Congress and it was to be performed by two strng quartets, one
was the Julliard quartet and the other was from the National
Symphony. I was in the LC on one of the days they rehearsaed it
and, as I went into the Whittall Pavillion to hear part of the
rehearsal, the doors behind which are the 5 Strads (2 violins, 2
violas, 1 cello) donated to the LC by Gertrude Clarke Whittall
were wide open and four of the Strads were out and obviously in
the hands of four of the players.

In one of the breaks, I made a comment about how wonderful it was
to hear 4 Strads at the same time, and one of the players from
the National said, "Not four -- eight!! We have the four Strads
from the National Galley of the Arts."

It is the kind of event that sticks with you.

I bought the Barenreiter Edition of the Octet from Annette
Luyben at Luyben Music for $45.50 US last year in OK. It
is the entire octet with the original errata and edited
corrections. It comes with all the parts and a score. In
the clarinet part, there are the C clarinet originals and
Bb transpositions too.
