While I cannot speak to the arrangement of the Mendelssohn Octet
for double woodwind quintet, Don Yunkurth's comments about some
arrangements being better in theory than in practice has been
true for me, too. I also played the Beethoven 7 Harmonie and
found it dreadful, though other Harmonie arrangements (such as
the Beethoven Fidelio and the Pathetique Sonata were both
magnificent).

I'll reserve judgement on the Mendelssohn because the piece in
its string octet form is so spectacular that it is hard to
understand how it might fail in the wind dectet form, but then
again, the Beethoven 7 is a magnificent work and it failed for
me.

I have no first-hand knowledge, but a friend who organizes larger
woodwind groups had the following to say:

>Our performing dectet has put this one in the bottom drawer.
There are

My own experience is that many transcriptions are probably more
fun to
play than to listen to. I'm thinking particularly of a wind
nonet
version of Beethoven's seventh symphony that was discussed here
recently. I really enjoyed playing those violin parts, but I
don't
think it did much for Beethoven! I think the same is true of the
ww
quintet arrangement of Dvorak's "American" quartet.
