Interesting. I agree one should use the specified instrument. I suppose the
only time when it really matters is for clarinet quartet, which sometimes
has an option between the two for the third part. I don't play quartets
much, but did once enjoy playing the Piazzola quartet on the basset horn. It
gave the ensemble a rich and interesting tone quality. But I see that other
quartets might call for a more homogeneous blend, when an alto might work
better.
