Several years ago I was in the lucky position to be able to compare an alto
(E-flat) clarinet and a bassethorn. I played several pieces on both, playing
them "as written", the E-flat instrument transposed to F, the basset horn
played as E-flat, and it was a beautiful experience. Some pieces worked
perfectly, on the alto clarinet, either transposed or not, but others worked
perfectly on the basset horn, either transposed or not. Both instruments
were Leblanc, fitted with the original mp and Vandoren 3 1/2 reeds.

In my opinion the whole discussion mentioned in the title is senseless:
there are two different instruments, and is the composer's responsibility to
use or not use them in their right contrxt.

I hope you had a merry Xmas and will have a blessed 2007
