Ann,

Assuming there's a good repair tech that you go to in your area, your first
step should be to have him/her see what can be done with the instrument. If
it's a school instrument the chances are the only maintenance it gets is
what students who borrow it put into it, which means it's probably not in
good condition. Its age doesn't have much to do with it, but leaky pads
probably do. If the school won't pay the tech, since you aren't taking on
the cost of buying the instrument or even renting it, consider whatever you
need to pay out of pocket to put it in playable condition an investment in
your own performance. You'll also be doing the next player who borrows it a
favor.

Having borrowed every one I've ever played, I'm no expert in basset horns. I
assume, since the market is relatively small to begin with and limited
primarily to professional or at least serious players, that there is no such
thing really as a "student level" basset horn and that a Selmer basset horn
of any "vintage" was made for professional use. In good condition it should
be a reasonably competent instrument - not necessarily wonderful, but
playable.

Man, do I wish I had the money (and chops) to justify buying Dan's
basset horn.

For past two weeks I have been playing on a school instrument, a
Selmer, dating from 70's. To see if I could work up the part to Non
pui di fiore for program Jan 2 (consulted archives, and expecially
noted Keith, Dan and Forrest comments).

I think this particular instrument is a dog--it reminds me of first
bass clarinet I used. I don't know if I can do acceptable performance.

This is outside the issue of extended keys being different than Selmer
bass. The organization isn't necessarily bad, just different.

Bass clarinet is my favorite to play, and a couple of years ago I got
a GOOD instrument.
