The recent thread about basset horns as been amusing. Clarinet players
whine too much about basset horns. My principle instrument is the oboe;
but, initially in order to fulfill a collection, I have have in the past
decade owned 6 bassetti, two each by LeBlanc, Selmer and Buffet. All have
worked well, and all were a pleasure to play. Each of course was different,
although the two Selmers that I have retained to use match one another the
most perfectly.
I was very pleased to play the Gran Partita, playing bassetto 2, last
summer; and to loan my Selmers out to do the same work, this time playing
oboe 1, this fall.
A serious oboist must have an oboe d'amore, at $7000, for Bach and
essentially nothing else. A serious clarinettist, whose principle
instruments cost half the price of an oboe, should have a bassetto for the
Gran Partita and the Requiem even if for nothing else.
Don't get me started on the subject of C clarinets.
I have a lovely Buffet bassetto to sell, by the way. Made in 1993, plays
like a charm, only $4000.
Good wishes,
Robert Howe
