It is interesting that Benjamin speaks about the aesthetics of
instruments. There is a great deal to one's playing that derives
from aesthetics. While I have no proof, I think I play better
when the thing on which I am playing is physically beautiful. I
was even going to have diamonds set in the bell of my basset
horn, only for the aesthetic value, but then I realized that no
one would able to afford it.

And I remember when Benjamin came to Las Vegas and played on my
instrument. I always enjoyed looking at the face of someone when
the first played the instrument. It was as if they were having
an epiphany.

I find all these comments by folks that have never laid eyes on
this
instrument rather interesting (er... Amusing?). A couple years
back when
Dan, Keith and Forest went to Las Vegas to play some Mozart, they
gave a
master class. At the conclusion of the class, they offered their
instruments for us to play.

I have to say that the instruments that Dan and Keith owned were
amongst the
best instruments of any sort that I have ever played. The
aesthetics of the
instruments were unbelievable (the pictures do not do them
justice) and they
were very even and great sounding... As for the aesthetics, I
generally
don't like anything other than the "traditional" blackwood/silver
look, but
these were a thing of beauty.

I have seen the ebay auctions only wishing that I could somehow
justify the
expense to own what is not just a great instrument by a work of
art. I can
only hope that Dan can find somebody deserving that would
appreciate such an
instrument.
