Subj: [kl] Carey Bell goes to SF Symphony

I don't recall reading any posts about this, so forgive me if it has been
mentioned.

Carey Bell, currently principal clarinetist with the San Francisco Opera
Orchestra was appointed as principal clarinet of the San Francisco Symphony
last week. Carey was a finalist with Greg Raden of the Dallas Symphony and
each played for a week recently with the SF Symphony as a final audition.
Carey played Mahler 4 and Greg played Shostakovich #5. I heard Carey's
performance and I have to say it was stunning. I had hoped to hear Greg play
as well, but my schedule did not allow it. I understand that Greg played
quite beautifully too.

Carey will take over the position starting in the Fall and will finish
out his season with the SF Opera with performances of "Der Rosenkavalier" -
certainly one of the best orchestral scores in the opera repertoire for
clarinet.

I have had the great privilege of playing with Carey for the past six
years on many occasions. His playing is captivating and inspiring and I
count these past six years of my career performing with him as the most
memorable and enjoyable.

The Opera orchestra will miss his imaginative playing and luxuriant
sound, but hey, we just have to walk across the street to still here him
play in the Symphony. I am certain Carey is just at the beginning of what
will be a long and brilliant career.
