Is this the only reed that you're having this problem with?

If so - not that I don't enjoy puzzles - my own advice is to stop wasting t=
ime on it. Good sounding reeds aren't *that* rare that it's worth very much=
detective work. If you start trying to adjust the problem away, you may ge=
t lucky, or else you'll destroy the rest of what you like about the reed. I=
f you need a high G, use a different one.

Obviously, if a number of reeds show the same symptom, it may not be a reed=
problem. A little dirt in an open hole or (especially cosidering the buzzi=
ng sound) a loose or torn pad skin could be a culprit.

In his instructions for the ATG Reed System Tom Ridenour suggests that if a=
ltissimo notes don't come out easily it's most likely too much cane in the =
"ears" (the corners) of the vamp. But if you decide to go ahead and try to =
fix the problem, you're already working on the thinnest part of the reed to=
begin with when you work at the corners and even a stroke too many with yo=
ur favorite abrasive may make the reed unplayable.

Buzzing sounds can come from cracks or splits, although why you'd only hear=
it on one altissimo note seems mysterious.

Or maybe the reed is just too soft to support a high G and you're accustome=
d enough to accommodating light reeds that you can still make this one soun=
d good.

Good reeds aren't exactly a dime a dozen, but they aren't really like gold =
nuggets either. :-)

Hi everybody!

Here's a nice little puzzle for you. I'm in the middle of my twice yearly=
=20
change-the-reeds-to-match-the-climate-change trauma. I spent my entire=20
practice time yesterday testing my collection of reeds to see which ones=20
would play well in dry, heated rooms, and one of them does not play an=20
altissimo G. I don't mean "it doesn't sound good" or "it's out of tune", i=
t=20
simply ISN'T THERE. It plays beautifully, with a wonderful tone, up to F#,=
=20
then the G fingering only produces a buzz like a kazoo! I spent ten minute=
s=20
on this and never even got a squeak. I've never encountered this before an=
d=20
can't think of anything that might cause it (or fix it--it really does have=
=20
a wonderful tone!). Any one have any ideas?
