Thanks, Mark. For the past ten years or so I've been only a student
of U.S. Copyright Law, fair use, and works in the public
domain. Every new article which comes out interests me and I'm sure
this one will, written as it was by a professor of law.

When I first put up my page of clarinet music I was rather sure I
would soon be nailed by one publisher or another, who wasn't
completely clear on the meaning of the public domain, but it hasn't
happened yet. When I discovered Laura's MIDI Heaven with
alphabetized songs from Disney movies I wrote to her with envy of her
nerve (to advance the concept of fair use to the utmost extreme) to
do what she was doing. I asked if anyone was yet bothering her, to
which she answered that the owners of such intellectual property
seemed at the time to be more interested in moving on people who were
offering performance files taken off CDs. But it wasn't long before
her site was closed down but later reappeared in a much modified
form. Pierre Schwob is careful to admonish contributors to his page,
the Classical MIDI Archives, that they must be SURE that the piece
which is being contributed is in the public domain or that permission
has been received from the owner.

Thanks again. The article will be a good read, I'm sure.

Oliver
