I'm a retired psychiatrist. When I was in high school more than 50
years ago I was focused on academics and getting into a good college and
going to medical school. Music was a sideline which I just took for
granted. I didn't take private lessons, but I played clarinet in the
band and orchestra for four years. The college didn't have a band or
orchestra, so I sang in the choir and only played clarinet occasionally
for my own pleasure. Then for 45 years I hardly played or sang at all.
I am now retired and find that one of my greatest pleasures is playing
in the local community college band and singing in the community
chorus. I regret that it took me so long to get back into music, but I
am very thankful for the early musical foundation in grade school and
high school.
p.s. Research indicates that making music is also a preventive for senility.
