This afternoon I heard a performance of an excellent new concerto for
clarinet and strings: "Summer Solstice" by Daniel Dorff. It is an engaging
work, lyrical and full of good humor. It was performed with brilliance and
sensitivity by Sean Osborn. The orchestra was the Philharmonia Northwest
conducted by Roupen Shakarian.
Dorff himself is a clarinetist and his writing reveals a mastery of the
