I've had no trouble travelling with an alto saxophone and a pair of
clarinets, even at the same time. In one case I was asked to have the
flight attendants stow the saxophone in a closet they had; apparantly this
is not uncommon with regard to slightly larger pieces of luggage.
I would imagine one irrational decision by a low-level security gaurd would
not be insisted upon if you remain adamant.
Recently I made it on board with a reed knife, too...
