Subj: [kl] "The Great Clarinet Circus" premieres Dec. 2
Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2006 20:26:37 -0500

The Los Angeles Clarinet Choir, an ensemble of 14 accomplished adult
clarinetists performing on soprano, sopranino, alto, basset horn, bass,
contrabass and contra-alto clarinets, will present a World Premiere at
their fall concert Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at 7:30 pm, at the
Neighborhood Church of Pasadena, 301 N. Orange Grove Avenue, Pasadena,
California.

The featured composition on the program will be a major new work for
clarinet choir and percussion, "The Great Clarinet Circus", by the
distinguished California composer, Edward Cansino, written in 2206 for
the Los Angeles Clarinet Choir. Inspired in part by the composer's
recollections of the famous circus clown, Emmett Kelley, the work also
contains a tribute to the American composer Charles Ives, quoting from
his song "Circus Band."

Each of the nine movements of this "musical circus" depict a different
circus act or animal: Elephants, Aerialists, a Lion Tamer, and A Sad
Clown, which features solo basset horn, to be played by Gary Robertz..
Lori Musicant Koch will be the b-flat clarinet soloist, joining
freelance percussionist Scott Higgins in an extended solo for clarinet
and xylophone, "Jugglers." Hollywood actor, Richard Hayworth, will mime
the role of the Sad Clown, and dancer Deanna Beasom will lead the Circus
Parade into the hall. The composer envisions a noisy atmosphere with
applause and cheers interrupting the flow of the music, unlike a
conventional concert, and the experience should appeal to all ages.

Also on the program are the Allegro from the Serenade "Eine Kleine
Nachmusik" by W.A. Mozart, transcribed by Frank Sacci; Maurice Ravel's
"Mother Goose Suite" arranged by Anthony Brackett; and Gordon Jacob's
"Introduction and Allegro."

Admission is $12; children age 12 and under are admitted free. All seats
are general admission. Advance ticket purchases are strongly suggested
to guarantee seats and may be made by calling 310-464-7653. Scores and
parts for "The Great Clarinet Circus" will be available for purchase
from the composer in 2007.
